Route descriptions

Final update to follow with detailed route descriptions. We have made some changes to the routes – better ending for the 20km, big changes to the 12km and also the 6km.

20km total climbing: 800m

This is the now infamous old favourite route with two major climbs deep in Greyton’s nature reserve.  These are mostly on rough single track and should not be underestimated!  After a fast flat 3km start to spread the field, the first big (300m) climb begins up the stunning Hardepeer trail.  Then it is into the gorge and over the Gobos river before your second big climb (also 300m) which will feel tougher than the first.  It will be tempting to follow the 12km route home here!  There are two water points after the main climbs.  The last 5km is meandering trail much of which has been recently developed and includes a fast, flat finish.

12km – total climbing: 290m

This year we start you off with some beautiful and not too challenging trail that takes you in the nature reserve.  After going deep into the gorge, and crossing two rivers, you will arrive at the base of Zigzag, just before the halfway mark. This is a 150m switchback trail up to the viewpoint over Greyton, and is the major climb of the day.  A water point awaits you at the top, followed by a combination of jeep track and trail through the proteas that will take you to the finish.

6km – total climbing: 160m

Even though this is the shortest distance, don’t be fooled: this is a proper trail run!  This year features a brand new route with much more climbing and much more mountain trail.  The route starts with a gentle climb which gradually gets steeper.  At the 2km mark all the climbing is done and the real fun begins. Be sure to check out the views up to the mountain and down to the village as you wind your way down single track through the tall Protea bushes.  The last 1.5km is fast and flat.

10km (+-) Guided group hike: R175.00

Popular demand meets popular supply from the local Greyton Hiking Club.  Join the group for a guided hike into and out of the nature reserves mountain's while also making use of two of the refreshment stations.  Makes for a glorious morning.

Where?

Start and finish  - The Old Potter’s Inn and Brewhouse have generously donated their venue (and their brew).  You’ll find them at 16 Main Road, Greyton.  You can’t miss it!

What does your entry get you?

Well the way it works….jumpstart your day with a coffee; Along the route you’ll find three water points – one for the 6km, one for the 12km and two for the 20km – we have Ice Tea energy drinks, cokes, water, treats and banana bread galore!  If you make it to the finish, and trust me you’ll want to…kick back on the lawns opposite Potter’s Inn and Brewhouse with a pint of Greytons very own brew.  Nothing could be better!

Prizes

The male and females on the podiums in each event will win prizes, and all entrants will receive an Old Potters Draught to cool you down on finishing.

The prize giving should take place at roughly 12:00pm on the lawn opposite Potters Inn.  There will be lucky draw prizes.

Lunch

Greyton has a few good restaurants very close to the race venue. There will also be some easy-food and drinks for sale on the lawn, or bring your own picnic and picnic blanket. Good chill out zone.

Parking

Pass Greyton House Village School (on your left) as you enter Greyton and park at the Old Moravian Hall next door to the yellow library.  Parking attendants will keep an eye on your car for the day.
